crap!

Still messing around with Debian GNU/Linux.
Thoughts so far.
It is definitely NOT to be installed while half awake or if you are not one to pay attention. The first time I tried it I ended up with only a command line and I couldn’t install anything else. Apt-get wouldn’t ‘get’. I couldn’t ‘startx’ or even run joe. My arrogantly-meek inner voice stepped out, stood beside me and said, “Here’s another fine mess you’ve gotten us into. I’m not going to tell you what to do; it’s not my place. But maybe you should pay a little more attention. I’d help, but you know I can’t afford to pay attention. It’s not in my budget. If only there was some way to fix this situation. Perhaps I’ll go back to the little shoe box in the middle of the pot-holed road that you keep in the back of your head, just out of the way so the tourist don’t see me. Besides, I’ve got dirt clods in the oven. Don’t mind me, I’m sure the problem will sort itself out. Maybe even over tea, wouldn’t that be lovely. Not real tea mind you, we have to make it from grass clippings…” at which point I stopped listening since I figured out what I did. It seems you need to select the actual box, not just leave it highlighted. Oops. It gave me an idea though. First I needed to do a basic hand held install (reading as I went of course.)
This went ok this time. I got ahead of myself and couldn’t figure out how to go backwards during the install routine. I ended up with an 800*600 resolution. Good enough to see that all the hardware was going to behave. Reboot and do my first mistake, but on purpose. I couldn’t think of a better way to get to know the command line.
So far I’ve got X installed, KDE installed, and of course some silly games installed. The games are what made me realize that the nv driver for my video card has no 3D acceleration. Need to install the nvidia driver. It seems this is easier said than done. I have not yet given up hope on this.

Other news.
The Weed Eater needs its engine cleaned.
Mowers out of gas.
The van has a flat and needs new tires.
The cat is still 111, or is he Ill?
I’m grouchy and tired.
I think I’m getting sick, but probably just haven’t had time.
I think the same goes for Melissa.

The plan today was for Melissa to go to her company picnic and I’d stay home feeding the cat and work on Debian.
Not happening.
To top it off when we got out of Sam’s Club there was a religious pamphlet under the wiper. Like a calling card. Fine. So be it.

Hey at least I woke up in a good mood. It was the best 2 hours of my day.
On the bright side, it’s been so long since I read the first Dirk Gently novel I don’t remember what happens.
