Four Post Bed

Shortly after we purchased our first home we decided to make a Four Post bed. Money was still very tight. The only DIY on TV was This Old House. Lowes was not yet in Alaska. Copper pipe was still cheap, lumber was as well. The Cat was still little. and the digital camera might have done 640*480, I was nearly half my size.

We decided to build it as a skin around a normal bed frame. We knew nothing of Joinery techniques at this point other than parts needed to be joined together. We had hardly any tools. I think we bought the palm sander specifically for the project. My FIL found the circular saw at a garage sale.

Holy Shit I was thin

Sorry for the lack of lighting. These were taken with a Kodak DC3200 (I think that’s what it was) I cleaned them up as best as I could. I’m sure being in the dark garage with the door open on a bright day didn’t help any either. The cardboard is because both vehicles leaked oil. The Blazer because it had nearly 300,000 miles on it, the Rabbit because, well because they leaked when they were new.

So Basically, we glued the foam to the plywood and wrapped it up in a fabric. The fabric would prove to REALLY like cat hair. The copper pipe became the curtain rods. The Stair brackets were used to join the pieces together while the standard bed frame fit inside. On the back of the headboard we ended up installing a shelf for the cat to keep him off of our heads in the middle of the night.

After a few years, we decided we were very tired of stubbing our toes on the posts, getting caught up in the curtains in the middle of the night, and it was just too big for the size of the room so we took it down. The plywood and posts were used in various other projects. I think. I can’t recall which. It was a long time ago.
