So as stated before, about a year ago really: I had to wait for the outside work on the house to be completed to finish my office. The outside of the house was completed a few moths ago. My office is nearly complete. I really only have the baseboard trim to complete and I am going to wait a bit on that. I need to build a new desk for work first. For this I am taking my time and using Fusion360 to work it out in CAD first. It is weird using and making plans for a project instead of just building something. Initially I was designing built in cabinets for all over the room.
Adding up materials, as well as freight & delivery, and not having space for storage right now due to having stocked up on the drywall for Melissa’s office was causing some issues. That is if I could even get the material I was wanting to use. The cheap mediocre quality plywood from the home centers is running about $100.00+ per sheet. If I could get the stuff I want from the dealers, I’m looking at $179.00 or more per sheet, but I wouldn’t be able to get the 12-18 sheets I need. Even going the route of melamine particle board and MDF I’m looking at $80.00 per sheet, and a lot more weight to be messing with, and a lot less shelf strength. For all of these, I would still need to get Poplar or something for the trim and door frames. All told, with the 3 cabinets I designed, I was at almost $2,000.00 in materials just for Particle board. over $5,000.00 with Birch Plywood and who knows if and when I would be able to get that, let alone have the budget for.
We opted for a ‘temp’ solution. If I’m going to go the route of Melamine Particle board, I need to look at RTA Furniture first. There may be something I can just modify. We looked at the RTA Gods known as IKEA. (ducking) I ended up finding some things very close to what I was already designing. The dimensions were a little smaller width wise, and a bit deeper that I was going for but it was close enough. Added bonus that it was also made of real wood, not particle board or MDF, already painted white, and some features would actually be better than I was working on. And since the style was similar to what I was designing, I only have to make a new desk for work at some point. The idea with that is to make it look like a wardrobe so I can put the work desk away and not have all my stuff all over the walls that are work related.
So now we have my room mostly back together, and we can begin Melissa’s room. We took this Thanksgiving weekend and moved her out of it. She’ll work out in the media room for the next little bit while I get the new lights in and sound deaden the walls etc. Just like my office, but no waiting for a mold repair (fingers crossed) and two walls. We decided to also redo the common wall with the adjacent bathroom so she would have reduced toilet flushing sounds.
So in a bit (relative to a lifetime) I will make a post about the outside of the house. It’s a lot.
