Phase I, in which Doris gets her oats…

Phase one of the shop is nearing completion. It’s strange, as I unload my tools and such from the boxes and the temporary shelves that they were crammed into and onto, I kept thinking to myself “I have a lot of crap”. At the same time, I have kept running into situations where I think that “I should’ve moved this, or that” things like pegboard hooks, hinges, door knobs, drawer pulls, a 100 pounds of various screws and their containers, thousands of sheets of sanding paper…

I know the problem was that we knew when we first got down here we would have no place to store it. as it was we had a router table in the dining room, and a table saw in the living room. It did accent the workbench and couch very nicely.

The whole of the second bedroom was just used as storage.

So there really was no room. Sure we could’ve rented a storage unit, but that would be logical.

So almost two years later, not only are we in the new house, but I’m finally unpacking for real. Instead of just breaking into a box to see if something is in there that I know damned well I left in Anchorage.

So, phase one of the shop. It took a bit longer than I had planned. Mostly because I acquired 11 overhead lighting troffers and bulbs, and with most of the external wiring intact. the lighting I was looking at for the shop was about $50 each, and I would’ve needed at least six of them to be decent. With the large troffers I have plenty of light to avoid shadows when I’m doing finish work. And enough light in each zone that I don’t get flicker clipping from the saws. My only issues so far has been adjusting to walking around without a shadow, and the dark ceiling.

There’s still some tinkering and unpacking left, but at this point I can tinker with it before starting phase two on the other side of the garage.
