Progress

10 months and we are finally getting the repairs for the exterior taken care of from the initial discovery of the water leak in my office window. 6 months since we found a contractor then most of that time trying to get the funding set up because of loan industry back logs and ineptitude. One would think that they would at least be able to read an address correctly.

Since that time we also discovered a leak behind the refrigerator from back when Lowe’s sent out repair people for a warranty repair. It was a very fine pinhole in a kinked water line to the water/ice maker. The repair people pushed the appliance all the way to the wall causing a kink in the line. This caused a pinhole leak to basically very lightly mist the wall. Over time enough water had run down the wall and behind the molding, and under the floor to cause mold. Once the mold built up, and the MDF trim swelled enough, this then sealed off behind the molding and then the water began to run over the molding and onto the floor under the fridge. This then ran to the bottom of the plywood edge panel causing it to swell and finally mold finally making it visible. The pinhole leak was so small and the mist so fine we never heard any water running, nor saw any difference in our water bill, or rather since we are flat rate never had any notification from the utility company.

There has been much progress on my office remodel, you know the thing that started all the other things. The wall and ceiling have been taped and textured where I am able to at this time. The side with the leak has not yet been touched as I have needed to wait until the exterior repairs were completed. I am currently waiting until I can get two sheets of 1/2 inch drywall to the house. What has been completed is textured and primed, I have a colour picked out (I think), and I may wainscot the lower half to fancy things up a bit. I haven’t decided.

The floor is also in. I went super easy. I was actually able to get the sub floor level to within 1/8″ over the entire 13 foot by 13 foot span of the room. WAY ABOVE the requirement. All the dumb thing that were done with the construction of this house, using the engineered joist was not one of them. I went with a thicker luxury vinyl. This way I don’t have to worry about refinishing, it’s a bit quieter when you walk on it and it is certainly warmer than wood. From testing videos I watched, and what they showed me in the store, it seems to hold up better as well. From what I have already dropped, I think this is true. I went with a thicker wear layer and product in general. It also has a lifetime residential warranty so I think I’m set. Chairs roll easily, but not so easily that I’m having to constantly move back into position. the only thing O don’t like is that the chair mat slides out from under you. The store manager stated to not use one, the mention on the warranty is because of scratches and such, but the stuff I have has a ceramic coating so it’s fine.

Since I ended up just ordering a solid core door replacement, I took the slab I had been working on and made a new desktop for my home workstation. Kind of an experiment for what might work for the work setup and how I need it to work for the home setup. It is made of laminated Sapele scraps from my previous job. It is roughly 1-1/4 inch thick, 79 inches long and 24 inches deep. I had a lot of issues with the finish as some areas just did not want to build up properly. I usually don’t like the high gloss, plastic coated look, but in this instance it really helps the figure light up, and be a bit tougher since this is a high use and abuse station, well at least for me. so it’ll last 200 years before refinishing is needed :-). It’s currently covered in all kinds of things for the multiple projects that are on hold, or in process.

A big big big thank you to our neighbor for letting Melissa park on their property while the work is being done outside.
