The end of September

I hardly knew ye.
What a rough month. Nothing seemed to go right on the first try.
Computers
Try to make it so we can watch video off the network in the bedroom, and it turned out that the board I swapped with just wasn’t stable enough to handle being a server. It’s a shame because there were no fans on it so the only thing that made noise was the hard drives. In the end it worked out better, through the magic of rearrangement and purchase, We have a better setup for what we need, plus I made an external drive to do the large backups onto. This should work much better than doing 20 DVD’s every month. The way I have it set up now is a little better for us too. The OS is on a completely separate drive from our files. That way I can play with the OS to my hearts content without having to worry about screwing up the info we actually really need to keep, and since the nightly backups automatically copy the /etc directory over to the second drive I don’t have to even worry about my config files. If I hadn’t have tried to be cheap in the first place I could’ve done all this in a few hours. Not a week.
Household
I returned the Router plate because it was defective, I was unaware that the place has a 2-3 week turnaround time on returns. So all the projects that I wanted to get done this month have been put on hold. Including the router table itself. I did manage to get the drawers completed for the workbench. The faces and the sides are from some of the pieces of the entertainment center we dismantled a while back.

The dovetailing on the drawers is how I discovered that the router plate was a bit warped in the wrong direction. They don’t quite line up correctly. Good enough for the bench though.

Work bench drawers

There is still more to do, I have some face trim to put on the box frame, and some side storage shelves to attach, and possible a large pull out drawer on the bottom. As it is now, I gained enough space that all my tools can now be put away. (I think)

Then I decided to mow the lawn a couple of weeks ago when we had a break in the rain. The mower wanted nothing to do with it. after trying at various times to tinker with this and that (Not being in any particular hurry to actually mow the lawn yet) and failing each time I was going to take it in to have it serviced. I looked up a local place that does small engine repair here in Anchorage (there are only 4 listed in the yellow pages) They wanted $65/hr w/a min half hour time. If it was major, it would take about an hour, minor it was an automatic $32.50. Plus any parts I would need. I got the mower free. I decided to just tear the whole thing apart (having never done such a thing before). We went to Lowe’s (I had a gift card) Ran some other errands, came back and took a lot of it apart and cleaned it. I put it back together completely unsure of my self as the carborator fell into pieces, pulled the starter rope, and scarred the shit out of my self when it started on the first pull. I immediately mowed the lawn in case it died. Now that I have the concept, and see how simple it is, I may tear it apart this winter and repaint the mower body. I was thinking Hot Pink or something.

Da wifes B-day.
We went to see Diana Gabaldon do her Author/tour signing thingy. It was a good time.
