Water Woes… Wonderful!

So last weekend (two ago now, but today’s a holiday) I was attempting to run some exterior grade CAT6 for an outdoor camera. Well planning how to get the wire into the house and into the server closet. There was a vent fan there that is no longer needed and since that has a plenty big hole I figured I’d just cover it with a junction box and go in that way. When I cleared off the shelf to get access tot he fan I discovered that the corner of the ceiling was missing a rather large chunk of drywall mud and it was a bit black in some parts, and oh, is that mildew I smell? Great, a water leak.

It wasn’t actively wet, so we assumed it was a roof leak of some sort. The spot lines up with the furnace exhaust and we thought that it was running down the pipe through a chase on the second floor. Left a message with a roofer. A couple days later I decided to go ahead and start pulling out the vent fan. Inside the ceiling, between the joists I found pipes running along the outside perimeter of the house. Right in line with where the leak damage is.

We did some tests and discovered that it’s the hot water line to the master bathroom. Initially it seemed that it was just to the bathtub so it was a don’t use the bathtub for now thing. We then discovered it was the whole bathrooms supply and that it’s a small drip when the hot water runs. Nothing that can’t be taken care of with a cloth until we get a plumber in. In the meantime, I’d empty out the closet to give them room and then we’d call.

A couple of days ago I began moving the things out of the closet, some of which I was going to put in the alcove in the garage where the furnace and water heater are. WAS. There was a large puddle on the floor. The water heater was leaking now as well.

So that is where were at. Oh yeah, we got dumped on with snow over the weekend as well.
